Root Canal Aftercare Guide: What to Expect, Recovery Timeline & What to Eat
Congratulations on completing your Root Canal Treatment (RCT) at Aureva Dental! By removing the infected pulp from inside your tooth, we have saved your natural tooth from extraction and eliminated the source of severe dental infection.
Proper post-operative care during the next few days is essential to ensure smooth, uneventful healing of the surrounding bone and periodontal ligaments. This guide provides clear, practical instructions on what to expect, pain management, diet, and next steps.
What to Expect in the First 24 to 48 Hours
It is completely normal to experience mild tenderness, dull aching, or a 'bruised' sensation around the treated tooth for 2 to 3 days following an RCT. This is not pulpal pain (the tooth nerve has been completely removed), but temporary inflammation in the periodontal ligament fibers that anchor the root into your jawbone.
Numbness from local anesthesia will persist for 2 to 4 hours after your appointment. Avoid chewing on your lips, cheek, or tongue while sensation is reduced. Do not consume very hot beverages until full sensation returns.
Pain Management & Medication Protocol
Take all prescribed anti-inflammatory and pain medications exactly as directed by Dr. Shweta Singh or Dr. Agniss Mishra:
1. Scheduled Analgesics: If prescribed an NSAID (such as Ibuprofen or Paracetamol), taking the first dose before the numbness completely wears off significantly minimizes discomfort.
2. Antibiotic Course: If antibiotics were prescribed due to pre-existing swelling or bone infection, complete the full course even if you feel completely fine after two days. Stopping early can breed resistant bacteria.
3. Avoid Home Poking: Do not poke the treated tooth with your tongue, fingers, or toothpicks.
Diet & Chewing Guidelines
To safeguard the temporary filling and avoid fracturing the tooth:
1. Chew on the Opposite Side: Avoid chewing food on the side of your mouth with the treated tooth until your permanent crown has been cemented.
2. Soft Food Diet: Stick to soft, lukewarm foods for the first 48 hours—such as khichdi, dalia, curd rice, soup, steamed vegetables, and scrambled eggs.
3. Avoid Hard, Crunchy & Sticky Foods: Stay away from nuts, chewing gum, hard crusts, and sticky sweets that could dislodge your temporary filling.
4. Gentle Brushing & Flossing: Continue brushing your teeth normally with a soft toothbrush. When flossing near the temporary filling, gently slide the floss out sideways rather than snapping upward.
Why a Permanent Dental Crown Is Essential
A tooth that has undergone a root canal loses its internal blood supply and moisture, making the remaining tooth structure brittle over time. Chewing forces on back molars can exceed 50 to 70 kg of pressure.
Without a high-strength protective dental crown (such as Zirconia or E-Max ceramic), a root canal-treated molar has a high risk of catastrophic vertical fracture that cannot be repaired, forcing extraction. Schedule your core buildup and crown appointment at Aureva Dental within 1 to 3 weeks following RCT completion.
Red Flags: When to Contact Us Immediately
